Two questions come before any glass advice: is this an exterior opening or an interior partition, and does the house sit north–south or take hard east–west sun? In a terrace intermediate lot the middle of the house lives on the light that comes in at the two ends, so we choose glass by visible light first — as bright as the application allows once heat and privacy are handled.

Indicative glass-only visible-light transmission (VLT) from supplier samples, not whole-window values. Solar heat gain (SHGC), U-value, UV transmission and reflectance are quoted from the glass datasheet on request — lower SHGC means less solar heat enters.

Street-facing high-rise balcony enclosure: 6mm low-iron + 12A + 6mm low-iron, both panes laminated — An acoustic upgrade on both counts — the cavity for voices, the interlayer for traffic rumble — with heat, condensation and fragment-retention benefits and an uninterrupted panoramic view.

This is your primary glazing choice — the glass is a make-up of several things at once. Its safety treatment (tempered or laminated), any tint or coating and the exact build are combined and confirmed at your site measurement and quotation; a laminated tinted pane, for instance, is one build, not a separate step.

Movement quality — how the door moves and settles. Standard hinges or rollers rated for the leaf are the baseline; flag the upgrades you want confirmed at quotation.

This is the wall the door fixes INTO — the supporting substrate. It is a separate thing from the visible opening surround (the next step): a brick opening is the support; aluminium, timber or stone is only the finish wrapped around it.

Threshold, seals, drainage and any making-good are confirmed against the actual opening at the site measurement — an existing masonry or concrete opening is rarely square.

11 Is the frame casing included — and on one side of the wall or both?Cost direction only — settled at quotation

A separate decision from the door and the wall: the visible finish wrapped around the opening. It is priced on its own, by casing run — the head and both jambs — never bundled into the door leaf.

12 Budget & the complete installed assembly

Compare the whole installed door — leaf, frame, glass, hardware, lock, seals and installation — not the leaf on its own; the opening surround and the opening preparation stay their own lines beside it. A cheaper leaf can end up costing more once non-standard framing and accessories are added.
